Based on Tomohito Ōsaki’s spinoff novels of Hideaki Sorachi’s Gintama manga, the series follows Ginpachi Sakata, a high school teacher with a personality completely unfit for his job, as he navigates the chaos of his classroom and students. The novel series debuted in 2006, with the most recent volume published by Shueisha in 2018. The concept has been adapted as shorts in previous Gintama episodes, but this is the first full anime adaptation.

The Legacy of Gintama

The original Gintama manga, a blend of science-fiction, period drama, and comedy, began serialization in 2003 and concluded in June 2019 with over 55 million copies in circulation. Over the years, Gintama has inspired multiple TV anime adaptations totaling 367 episodes, three feature films, several OVA specials, and even live-action films.

The most recent anime series aired in July 2018, while Gintama: The Final, a film combining the series’ finale with new elements, premiered in January 2021. Eleven Arts brought the film to North America in late 2021, with a Blu-ray release in early 2022.
