Aira Shiratori has recently joined the hero team in Dandadan and has already won fans over. So, let’s find out who she is and how her powers work.
Dandadan introduces viewers to its protagonists from the get-go and then adds a new member to the team from the following story arcs. The first of these main characters – apart from the protagonist duo: Momo and Okarun – is Aira, the most popular girl in the school.
She begins her journey as an unlikeable character who mocks Okarun and spreads nasty rumors about Momo. But as the story progresses, Aira develops into a better character and becomes an integral part of the group. Eventually, she takes up the mantle as the leader of the group.
Aira debuts in Dandadan in Episode 5 of the anime series and Chapter 10 of the manga. In the anime, she’s voiced by Ayane Sakura, who’s best known for her roles as Ochako Uraraka in My Hero Academia and Gabi Braun in Attack on Titan. Kikoku Inoue, who played Lust in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, voices Aira’s yokai form.
Who is Aira Shiratori in Dandadan?
Aira Shiratori is a high school student who regains her spirit ability to see supernatural beings after finding one of Takakura’s family jewels.
She’s the most popular girl in the school, known for her beauty and ditzy yet charming personality. But underneath it, she’s a person who knows how to weaponize her popularity and likeability, as seen when she spreads some horrible rumors about Momo in school.
However, at her very core, Aira is a kind-hearted girl whose contempt for Momo comes from her misunderstanding that the latter is a demon. During the Acrobatic Silky Arc, she finds one of Okarun’s golden balls and regains her ability to see supernatural beings. That’s how she ends up meeting the titular yokai who has been following her since childhood.
Acrobatic Silky’s flashback reveals how tragically she lost her beloved daughter and haunted the earth looking for her even after her own death. But when little Aira, who could see spirits, approached her, mistaking her for her deceased mother, the spirit confused Aira for her own daughter and turned into a yokai to protect her. Since then, she’s been following and protecting Aira from the shadows.
After the Acrobatic Silky Arc, she joins the group and eventually becomes close friends with everyone else on the team. Along with it, Aira also develops a crush on Okarun, which remains unrequited despite her best efforts.
Aira’s powers explained
Thanks to her encounter with Acrobatic Silky, Aira gains the yokai’s supernatural powers.
When she channels the yokai power, she transforms into a new form with incredibly long hair, which she can use in a variety of ways at her will. Her face also gets masked by that of Silky’s, though she can control the mask.
This yokai form gives her superhuman strength, speed, and agility, but her strongest suit is her acrobatic skills, thanks to which she can be very flexible on the battlefield and throw a mean kick.
While Aira becomes more powerful throughout the series, her strongest moment comes during the Space Invaders Arc. At her wit’s end, she uses the Power of Words under Momo’s suggestion and unleashes her strongest technique: Pirouette Noble Drill. In this technique, she wraps her hair around herself and launches her body toward the target to drill through them. It’s so powerful that it can even pierce through the strong armors of the missile aliens.
