Kaguya-sama: Love is War and Oshi no Ko’s author Aka Akasaka has announced his upcoming project ahead of the idol manga’s conclusion on Wednesday.
Oshi no Ko is one of the most celebrated manga of recent years and has spawned two successful seasons of an anime series. After running for four years since its debut in 2020, the manga is finally coming to an end with Chapter 166. Illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari (creator of Scum’s Wish), this is the second breakthrough series by Akasaka.
Before Oshi no Ko, the mangaka had previously created the romantic comedy Kaguya-sama: Love is War, which was serialized from 2015 to 2022. Now, the author is all set to add another title to his resume as he’s announced his next project after Oshi no Ko with a teaser image.
The unnamed manga, which appears to be of the fantasy genre, will be illustrated by Ajichika (artist of Record of Ragnarok) and will begin serialization in Spring 2025 in the Weekly Young Jump magazine. The synopsis of the upcoming manga says: “In a fairy-tale world, there are always princesses and princes guided by fate…”
The controversial Oshi no Ko ending
While fans were very excited for Oshi no Ko following Akasaka’s success with Kaguya-sama, it’s not the same this time. The reason behind that is the controversial ending of the idol manga, which is dubbed as “pointless” and “one of the worst manga endings” by readers.
The story of the manga is an intriguing mix of fantasy and realism. While it focuses on the dark side of the entertainment industry, it also introduces reincarnation as its central plot device. The manga follows the Hoshino twins – Aqua and Ruby – who were fans of the popular idol Ai in their past lives and are born as her children in this life. However, their lives are shattered when Ai is killed by an obsessive fan in their childhood.
What follows is Aqua’s pursuit of vengeance against the man responsible for Ai’s murder – their biological father Hikaru Kamiki. But despite the interesting plot and a group of strong supporting cast, the final arc and the ending have failed to meet fans’ standards.
The mangaka faces backlash from fans
With Oshi no Ko’s unsatisfactory ending still fresh in their minds, readers are not really supportive of Akasaka’s future project. Many are anticipating another disappointment while some blame the author for losing interest in Oshi no Ko before it ends.
“Nah he needs to take a break and get back to the drawing board because these last two endings have been horrible,” commented one X user regarding the upcoming manga.
“For how Oshi ended and now a new work announced, I don’t think I’ll even read it honestly if it has a potential of ending just like that manga,” chimed in another.
“It’ll start great, then by chapter 70/80, he’ll start to not give a shit. If it makes it that far that is,” added a third.
Someone else wrote, “Now I get why OnK was rushed to an ending: Akasaka got bored and already started working on a new manga.”
One tweeted: “Tbh this is kinda a slap in the face by Aka-sensei imo. Aka already has a new work lined up before Oshi no Ko even officially ends. I think my theory of them becoming bored with their manga and moving on is gaining credibility.”
