One of 2025’s most-awaited horror anime gets its first teaser trailer and release window

The Summer Hikaru Died, one of the most anticipated anime of 2025, has revealed its first teaser trailer and the release window.

Based on the horror mystery manga of the same name by Mokumokuren, The Summer Hikaru Died is all set to receive its anime adaptation in 2025. The anime series will make its debut in Summer 2025, meaning the worldwide premiere will be sometime in July next year, and will exclusively air on Netflix.

The horror anime is being animated by Cygames Pictures, a studio known for shows like Brave Bang Bravern!, Princess Connect! Re: Drive, and Uma Musume. Ryouhei Takeshita, who’s known for his stellar work in Jujutsu Kaisen, Oshi no Ko Season 2, and Wotakoi, is leading the project as the director and series composer.

As for the cast, only the voice actors of the protagonists have been revealed so far. Shuuichirou Umeda, who has previously voiced Akira Tendou in Zom 100 and Milo Genius in Mashle, will play Hikaru. Yoshiki will be played by Chiaki Kobayashi, who’s popular for his roles as Langa Hasegawa in SK8 the Infinity, Gabimaru in Hell’s Paradise, and Kiyoshi Adachi in Cherry Magic.

The Summer Hikaru Died is a mysterious, yet intimate tale of two best friends – Hikaru Indou and Yoshiki Tsujinaka. Born and brought up in a small village where they’re the only children of the same age, Hikaru and Yoshiki have always been each other’s closest companions. But their idyllic days of friendship see a dark twist one fateful summer.

After that day, Yoshiki eventually realizes that the “Hikaru” he knew and the one before him are not the same, even though their memories and feelings are the same. When he confronts his friend, he’s faced with a horrific being who threatens to kill him, despite professing its love and devotion to Yoshiki.

Now Yoshiki must come to terms with the grief of losing his friend forever while trying to get used to the being that now wears Hikaru’s face.
