Tanjiro Kamado is the main character of the Demon Slayer and certainly one of the few well-written characters in the story. From the beginning, Tanjiro has always shown as a good-hearted person who is always willing to help others.
Despite being only 13 years old, Tanjiro takes care of all the needs while his mother does all the household. However, one fine day, while he was away from home, a demon slaughtered all of his family except his sister.
She then turns into a demon and tries to eat her brother. But, thanks to Giyu (Water Harshira), the boy was saved and looked for no harm.
Despite his warnings, Tanjiro went straight to attack him but failed after being knocked down by Giyuu. While Nezuko was attacking to protect his brother, Giyu realized that this pair of siblings were different after all.
While leaving the siblings alone, Giyuu asked Tanjiro to go to the foot of Sagiri Mountain and find Sakonji Urokodaki and tell him that Giyu Tomioka had sent you.
As the story progresses, fans witness the expenditure growth of Tanjiro after getting trained with Sakonji Urokodaki.
Being the former Water Hashira, Sakonji Urokodaki had many things to offer Tanjiro so he could become a Demon Slayer and save others from demon attacks.
During the final section exam of Demon Slayer, Tanjiro showed us all of his sword skills learned from Sagiri Mountain. He also mastered almost all the forms of the Water Breathing technique.
Who Is Sakonji Urokodaki?
Introduced in the second episode of Demon Slayer, Sakonji Urokodaki is the former Water Harshira and the sensei of Giyu Tomioka, the current Water Harshira. Just like all the former Harshira, Sakonji Urokodaki cultivated the Water Breathing technique which was later used by Tanjiro Kamado, Giyu Tomioka, and Sabito.
Although Sakonji Urokodaki is the one who created Water Breathing, Giyu took it even further by adding the 11th form in “Death Calm.” We see first time in episode 20 of the season when Giyuu kills Lower Rank 5 Rui. Therefore, we can safely say that Sakonji Urokodaki was one of the most skilled Demon Slayers during his time.
During the final section, Tanjiro encounters the Hand Demon, imprisoned on Mount Fujikasen by Sakonji Urokodaki. He was on Mount Fujikasen for over 47 years. From him, we learn that Sakonji Urokodaki was a Demon Slayer in the Edo period, the Keio era.
Because of the grudge against Sakonji Urokodaki, the Hand Demon killed thirteen of Urokodaki’s disciples so far, and Tanjiro will be the fourteen. We also learn that Hand Demon was responsible for killing Sabito and Makomo.
As soon as Hand Demon starts toward him, Tanjiro uses a move learned from Sakonji Urokodaki and kills the demon. That’s how Tanjiro becomes the Demon Slayer and takes a step closer toward his goal.
What Tanjiro Learn During His Time Sankonji Urokodaki?
After receiving letters from Giyu (Water Harshira) explaining the circumstances of Tanjiro and his sister, Sakonji Urokodaki heads off to find them. While looking for a boy and his sister, Sakonji Urokodaki encounters Tanjiro, who tries to kill a demon with a knife.
Sankonji Urokodaki told him that the knife was not enough to kill him. He had to figure out the way by himself. In episode 2 of season 1, Sakonji Urokodaki begins to criticize Tanjiro for his weak resolve to take immediate action. He suggests if Nezuko goes on a rampage and eats someone, he should be the one to kill her and then kill himself.
While Tanjiro struggles to kill the demon, Sakonji Urokodak buries all the victims and prays. Before accepting Tanjiro as his disciple, Urokodaki tests his suitability to become a Demon Slayer. He suggests him to bring his sister and follow him. After successfully following him to his place, Urokodaki told him that the test was about to begin now.
Soon after successfully passing the test, Sakonji takes him as his discipline and explains a few things about him and a way to become a member of Demon Slayer Crops (passing the final selection exam.)
Just like his previous disciples, Urokodaki trains Tanjiro for the final selection exam and checks if he is worthy of being one of them.
He explains and teaches him how to climb the mountain successfully without putting stress on the body. He also teaches a proper way to breathe, even in places with thin air. Sankonji Urokodaki often fights with him to improve Tanjiro’s endurance and body stance while battling.
Eventually, after a year, Tanjiro had learned everything Sankonji Urokodaki could teach him. However, Urokodaki suggested continuing to work on the things he had taught him.
Final Selection
During the final selection test, Tanjiro encounters Hand Demon, the same demon imprisoned by Sakonji Urokodaki a long back. To make Urokodaki pay for capturing him, the Hand Demon killed thirteen of his disciples, and Tanjiro was the next. Before Hand Demon does anything, Tanjiro uses the first form of the Water Breathing technique, which he learned from Sakonji Urokodaki. He successfully sliced the head of the demon and later passed the test.
Tanjiro mastered all the forms of Water Breathing techniques and utilized them successfully throughout the show. Sakonji Urokodaki is the cultivator of the water-breathing technique and has taught it successfully to all of his disciples.
