Highlights
The special My Hero Academia manga chapter – A PIECE OF CAKE – is receiving an anime adaptation from Studio Bones and will be included in the fourth movie’s upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release.
Kohei Horikoshi’s renowned series recently expanded the franchise with a fourth original movie. Titled My Hero Academia: You’re Next, the film premiered in Japan on August 2, 2024, and saw immense critical and commercial success. As of November 22, it has amassed around $31 million at the global box office and has become the highest-grossing film of the franchise.
The anime movie is gearing up for another success as it’s announced to be released on Blu-ray and DVDs on February 19, 2025. But there’ll be more for buyers in this edition. The Blu-ray and DVD versions of the movie will have an extended runtime, featuring the anime adaptation of My Hero Academia’s A PIECE OF CAKE one-shot.
The one-shot was illustrated by Horikoshi for Volume Next ahead of the movie’s release and was distributed to moviegoers. The delightful short story is set just before the events of the fourth film and features Deku and other Class 1-A students spending some lighthearted moments together before all hell breaks loose.
My Hero Academia movie plot
The synopsis of My Hero Academia: You’re Next on the official website reads:
“‘Next, it’s your turn!’
“In a society where heroes and villains continuously battle in the name of peace and chaos, Deku, a U.A. High School student who aspires to be the best hero he can be, confronts the villain who imitates the hero he’s long admired. Can Deku and the rest of U.A. High Class 1-A protect the world by putting an end to Dark Might, the man claiming to be the new Symbol of Peace?”
While the story of the movie isn’t included in the My Hero Academia manga, it exists in the same timeline, having been set between Chapters 342 and 343. It means the film takes place between the U.A. Traitor Arc and the Final War Arc of the manga.
The beloved manga series debuted in 2014 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump and ended after a decade on August 5, 2024, with Chapter 430. It’s one of the most popular and highest-selling titles of the modern shonen genre, chronicling the adventures of Izuku Midoriya (aka Deku) and his classmates at U.A. as they work towards their dream of becoming Pro Heroes.
My Hero Academia received an anime adaptation from Studio Bones in 2016 and has had seven successful seasons and four original movies so far. The series announced its final season – season 8 – right after the seventh season’s finale in October 2024. The final season will arrive in 2025 but its exact release date hasn’t been announced yet.
