GKIDS has announced that A Silent Voice will have a nationwide rerelease in the United States on December 15 and 16, 2024.
Considered one of the best anime movies of all time, A Silent Voice is the brainchild of Yoshitoki Ooima and Naoko Yamada. It’s based on Ooima’s one-shot and manga of the same name, published in 2011 and 2013, respectively. The renowned studio Kyoto Animation took over its anime adaptation in 2014, with Yamada leading the project as the director.
Ahead of the release of Yamada’s new anime movie – The Colors Within – GKIDS has acquired the North American rights to her previous works, A Silent Voice and Liz And The Blue Bird. The Colors Within was released in Japan on August 30, 2024, and will be in American theaters from January 24, 2025.
But before fans catch Yamada’s new work, they can watch her eight-year-old masterpiece on the big screen.
A Silent Voice plot
A Silent Voice is a heartbreaking tale of mistake, remorse, and redemption. It follows Shouya Ishida who, along with his peers, bullies the deaf and mute Shouko Nishimiya relentlessly until she’s forced to leave the school. As the entire blame for the incident falls on him, Shouya begins to get isolated from his classmates and starts to realize his mistakes.
Years later, Shouya is an outcast with no friends and filled with depression and self-loathing. But as he finds Shouko again, the two develop a tender bond that changes both of them forever.
The portrayal of depression and isolation is so painfully vivid in the movie that all viewers are advised to keep a tissue box with them.
Cast and crew
A Silent Voice has a stellar team of crew and cast members. While the brilliantly talented Yamada was in charge of direction and storyboarding, Reiko Yoshida and Youta Tsuruoka handled the positions of scriptwriter and sound director, respectively.
Yoshida has previously written scripts for popular anime like Violet Evergarden, Maid Sama!, K-On!!, and Bakuman. Tsuruoka, too, has quite an impressive resume, as he’s been the sound director of renowned shows like Clannad, Bakemonogatari, Hyouka, and Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!
