Manga, being an inseparable part of our lives, sometimes sends out a deep meaning to its readers that makes us wonder. Look Back depicts a beautiful journey of life and its burden is telescoped through the eyes of two preteen kids. It’s an extraordinary life-altering saga of two girls who find each other’s company to be comforting, and what made it a bliss, is a manga. The lives of Fujino and Kyomoto, two kids who share a passion for manga and make a great start as a career until fate plays a brutal game with them, but still they are inseparable.

Ayumu Fujino and Kyomoto find each other out of the blue on a quiet afternoon. Fujino, who loves the attention of her fans and drafts some of the amazing manga in her school newsletter, suddenly finds herself threatened by a socially awkward girl, Kyomoto. An extremely introverted Kyomoto doesn’t do much but just sit at home and make manga. One day they meet each other, and from there onwards, their journey starts. They both initiated Shark Kick at the age of 13 and since that day, they haven’t looked back.

They became a sensation, and with each volume, their popularity grew. One day Kyomoto feels the desire to start her life in an art school. She leaves Fujino and starts her independent journey later to be killed by an idiotic student. This makes things difficult for Fujino as her partner in crime is dead. She returns to her home, where all began. A small strip of paper that Ayumu accidentally slipped under Kyomoto’s door, which starts their journey once again, appears in a parallel time.

This time Kyomoto meets Ayumu as an art student. Ayumu rescues her from the same student who killed her, and this once again starts things from a new beginning. Finding a manga strip from the parallel world makes Ayumu wonder how this came out. As she enters the room, she finds every copy of their manga series and the sequels they have. An empty strip in Kyomoto’s room makes Fujino remember how they met, with their same love for manga. She returns to her workstation and continues to work for Kyomoto.

Throughout the movie, both the girls create an obsession for drawing manga and then ultimately part ways. The backdrop of the countryside of Japan gives the series a surreal look. The love for manga connects them. It gives them a sense of living. This movie brings a heck of emotions as the girls share every moment, whether it’s driving or traveling the city. It’s a beautiful story of friendship, and even at times, when death comes in between their paths, their bond remains unstrained.
